As 2025 races to a close, many business owners are focused on sales targets, year-end functions, and getting through the last stretch. But here’s the truth few talk about- what you do now determines how smoothly you enter 2026.

In a recent episode of The Rev Room, BizRev CEO Francois Geldenhuys sat down with Ruan from Labournet and labour-law specialist Juliana van der Merwe to unpack what it really means to be compliance-ready– not just on paper, but in practice.

Why Compliance Still Matters

As Ruan explained, compliance isn’t just about ticking boxes- it’s about building stability.

From labour law and employment equity to skills development and health and safety, every element of compliance forms part of your company’s long-term sustainability.

“Ending the year off right is key. If you’re not prepared, the Department of Labour will be knocking- and fines can follow,” said Ruan.

If your company has more than 50 employees, your Employment Equity report must be submitted before 15 January 2026. For those no longer required to comply, remember to deactivate your EE profile online- a small but critical step that many overlook.

The Silly Season Trap

Juliana brought a reminder that often gets lost in the excitement:

Year-end functions might feel like a break from business, but they’re still company events.

“If you’re wearing a company shirt or driving a company vehicle- even at the after party- you represent the brand,” she noted.

In short: celebrate responsibly. Misconduct at a company event can still lead to disciplinary action. Protect your reputation, protect your team, and make sure your policies are up to date before the celebrations begin.

Unlocking Value Through Skills Development

Here’s the part that caught many business owners’ attention- you can get money back for investing in your people.

By submitting your Workplace Skills Plan and Annual Training Report in April, you qualify for a mandatory grant of around 20% from your Skills Development Levy (SDL). Additional discretionary grants may also be available.

“It’s one of the few times government actually says ‘thank you’ for upskilling your staff,” Ruan joked.

It’s not just good business- it’s smart business. Training builds capacity, boosts morale, and directly impacts profitability.

The Bigger Picture: Compliance as a Growth Strategy

Francois summed it up perfectly:

“Business is tough enough. If we can help companies stay compliant, unlock funding, and avoid penalties- that’s how we create value.”

At BizRev, the focus has always been on sustainable growth. That means giving entrepreneurs clarity, systems, and the right support- not more complexity.

The lesson? Compliance isn’t the enemy of creativity or growth. It’s the foundation that allows both to flourish.

The Data Behind the Dialogue

According to Stats SA’s 2024 Business Confidence Index, over 62% of SMEs cite compliance and administrative load as their biggest growth obstacle. Yet, those who invest early in governance and systems report 30% higher operational efficiency and better retention.

The numbers don’t lie- clarity and compliance pay dividends.

Final Thoughts

2026 isn’t just another year. It’s an opportunity to lead from structure, not survival.

So before you pour that glass of bubbly at the year-end party, ask yourself:

Is my business truly ready for what’s next?

If not- now’s the time to act.
